Westmoreland Museum of American Art
221 North Main Street
Greensburg, PA 15601
Telephone: 724-837-1500
Website: www.wmuseumaa.org
To launch our Fiftieth Anniversary celebrations in 2009, The Westmoreland will mount an exhibition celebrating our history as the repository for southwestern Pennsylvania artists. Dedicated in memory of founding Westmoreland director Paul A. Chew, the focus is on landscape and still life paintings that have come to light in recent years culled from the Museum's recent purchases and numberous private collections in the area. These paintings shed further light on the artists of the Scalp Level School. Many major works have been rediscovered through heightened interest in this field at aution houses and galleries. As more attention is paid to these painters and as the descendants and original owners pass away, more and more paintings become available to be shared with the public for the first time, in many cases, since they left the artists' studios.
