Eager to compete with the Eric Canal, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania built its Main Line of Public Works, stretching from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. The Allegheny Mountain proved to be a barrier to the canal section of the Main Line. This barrier was solved by building one of the most unique railroads in American history...and the first to conquer the Alleghenies.

At the park's Visitor Center, exhibits and the film share the personal and technical sides of the Portage Railroad. Atop the Inclined Plane #6 of the railroad, guests can visit a replica of the Engine House that once stood there. Visitors can observe the restored Lemon House tavern, and experience a peice of 1840's American and Pennsylvanian history. A walk through the woods along railroad's trace is exhilarating.

Include this museum on your "must see" list for the Laurel Highlands. With a permanent collection of more than 750 items, visitors experience a fascinating look at the textiles, inlaid woodwork, metal crafts, jewelry, and religious art of the Near East. Through these exhibitions, the Museum celebrates the magnificent artistic, cultural and spiritual heritage of this region, of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, and particularly its roots in and around Antioch (Syria), where in the Bible we learn that the followers of Jesus Christ were first called "Christians". (Acts 11:26) Wonderful icon collections are included in most exhibits. Plus, "Chapel and Icon Tours" are also available to accompany Museum Tours.

Bring your group for the day and enjoy a fabulous lunch along with your tour! Lodging available. Excellent group rates and packages!
